Not that long ago the Irish casino news was full of the huge complex of casino , hotel, golf course being planned at Two Mile Borris in Co Tipperary and in fact we reported that An Bord Pleanala had granted permission but in latest developments the reports in the Irish casino news are that Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said that such a large casino would not be allowed under new legislation which is being drafted. In this Irish casino news section we have previously reported that Ireland is suffering from outdated gambling legislation and it is therefore good that somebody is looking at it but developer Richard Quirke is probably less happy with Mr Shatter’s comments. The new legislation will however make provision for a number of smaller casinos which was welcomed by The Gaming and Leisure Association of Ireland so part of the complex may still be built. In the statement in the Irish casino news Mr Shatter suggested that the whole question of online casinos be looked at and said “The shortcomings in the current law, for example the absence of any regulation of online gambling, are exposing young people and other vulnerable persons to unacceptable risks” but more importantly he referred to the fact that without legislation the Government was missing out on any taxation which may come from online casinos although we have previously reported in the Irish casino news about the difficulty of collecting any such taxes when several of the major online casino operators are based in overseas locations.  Apparently fixed odds betting terminals would also be banned under new legislation as they would not be in the public interest. The new draft of the legislation is scheduled for Spring of next year so here in the Irish casino news section of casinos.ie we shall be keeping our eyes open and report developments to you..
